Scoliosis and exercises
Each case of scoliosis is different, which also means that there is not a standard treatment. For this reason treatment based on the Schroth method consists of a wide range of detailed exercises to meet the requirements of almost all types of scoliosis.
Scoliosis is partly a fixed deformity of the spine with structural changes. However, posture plays an important role. Patients must learn to develop a new physical awareness and sense of posture.
All Schroth exercises are multipurpose exercises and they should be done slowly to ensure maximum correction.
It is important to perform each exercise as if it were the sole exercise that is going to lead to success. Each exercise must be followed by a relaxation period.
Different exercises groups:
Mobilization exercises: these restore and improve mobility of the trunk, spine and shoulder girdle.
Shaping exercises have a de-rotating effect on the trunk and shoulder girdle. Always they have to be performed in conjunction with a special Schroth breathing technique.
Isometric exercises – stretching strength exercises: they should be performed after shaping and de-rotation exercises.
Breathing exercises
There are different exercises for patients with three curve and four curve scoliosis.
